Chapter 10 Surveillance
Ye Shengsong walked out of the room and headed for the kitchen without stopping. She leaned casually against the doorway.
"Dad, can I go see my brother? They haven't been to Grandma's for a long time."
The two people in the kitchen were startled by the person who suddenly walked in. Old Mrs. Ye glared at Ye Shengsong angrily.
Ye Shengsong pretended not to see it and walked towards Ye Xingguo with a smile. She tugged on Ye Xingguo's arm with her thin, dry little hand.
Ye Xingguo was a little surprised but didn't think much of it. He continued to quickly cut shredded potatoes. His knife skills clearly showed he was a frequent cook.
Old Mrs. Ye no longer paid attention to Ye Shengsong and lowered her head to tend the fire.
"Of course, that's your home too. Shengsong, don't blame your mother. She just favors sons over daughters, but she still cares about you. After all, you are flesh and blood from her."
Ye Shengsong quickly reached out and tossed the little black bean into Ye Xingguo's trouser pocket. She knew that clothes in this era were worn for at least a week before being changed, and she might hear what she wanted to hear sooner than that.
"I don't blame her, it's just that my mother hit me too hard today."
"Oh, right Grandma, I'm out of toilet paper. Could you give me a pack?"
Old Mrs. Ye originally wanted Ye Shengsong to get it from her room, but after thinking about something, she patted the dust off her body and stood up.
"Use it sparingly from now on. The monthly toilet paper ration is only four rolls."
Ye Shengsong followed Old Mrs. Ye with a good attitude and reached out to put the black bean into her trouser pocket. This old woman only changed clothes every half a month, and besides, her clothes were washed by the original owner, so it was easy to retrieve it.
After doing all this, Ye Shengsong took the toilet paper and slowly walked back to her room. She locked the door, quickly took out the tablet, put on her headphones, and was determined not to miss a single word of their conversation.
"Do you feel anything different about this girl today? I always feel like she's a different person."
Old Mrs. Ye pouted. The dog she raised dared to bite her.
"I'm not saying this to you, Mom, but is it necessary to not even let her eat an egg? Even for the sake of appearances, you can't be so obvious. It's embarrassing for Aunt Sun to find out today."
"I just don't want her to eat it. Seeing her spend our family's money is like cutting off my flesh. Plus, she costs several yuan in medical expenses every few months. I have to save it from her mouth."
Ye Xingguo was also speechless. The money spent at the hospital could buy so many eggs.
"That person gives us a lot of money. Besides, didn't they say they definitely want to keep her alive?"
"I'm keeping her alive, otherwise she would have grown so big? I, this old woman, held her since she was little."
Old Mrs. Ye thought of something and quickly leaned towards her son.
"Xingguo, how much money did that person give us this month?"
Ye Xingguo frowned, feeling a little displeased.
"It's the same as before."
"Still fifteen? I'm telling you, that girl is so grown up now, and her expenses will only get bigger. You should ask for more. I was thinking of making a new padded jacket. Look how long it's been since I bought new clothes..."
Hearing this, Ye Shengsong became very curious about the person who was willing to pay to support her. In the original owner's memory, the average monthly wage in this era was only twenty to thirty yuan. Who would be willing to spend more than half of their salary every month to support her for over a decade?
If the person paying cared about her, they had never visited once. But why would they persist with such a large sum of money? Was she an illegitimate child?
