Chapter 26 The Corpse Child

The feeling of suffocation swept through her, and the woman’s face turned ashen. Grasping Bai Ye’s wrist, she struggled desperately, her eyes filled with fear and disbelief.

“Why?” she rasped.

Why?

This was, of course, thanks to the T-virus enhancement, which had made Bai Ye’s already outstanding mental attributes even more terrifying, a capability known as mental pollution.

Then…

*Crack!*

Bai Ye’s palm tightened again, and the crisp sound of bone snapping echoed. The woman’s pupils constricted, her head lolled to the side, and she died.

“I have no obligation to satisfy your curiosity.”

Bai Ye dropped the woman’s corpse and looked around.

After the woman's death, the twelve people sent to the tomb door had all turned into corpses. Bai Ye cautiously examined them one by one, confirmed there were no survivors, then picked up his gun and forcefully pushed open the tomb door.

As the tomb door opened, Bai Ye immediately felt the surrounding temperature plummet.

Before him appeared a narrow, long passage. The moment the tomb door was opened, the oil lamps on both sides of the passage lit up automatically. However, the light from the lamps looked eerie, a strange green hue that exuded a sense of mystery.

Bai Ye hesitated no longer, slinging his gun over his shoulder, he stepped into the passage and walked forward. Suddenly…

*Creak!*

A piercing sound erupted, followed by the tomb door slamming shut with a heavy *bang*.

The atmosphere was somewhat oppressive, but Bai Ye paid it little mind.

So what if there were ghosts?

When King Huai Nan died, he had many living people buried with him. These individuals had transformed into Yin soldiers after death, helping to guard King Huai Nan's tomb.

In fact, the first of the three forbidden zone quests within King Huai Nan’s tomb was to kill fifteen tomb-guarding spirits.

This was also why Bai Ye had intercepted them at the tomb door and eliminated everyone sent to this particular entrance.

The number of tomb-guarding spirits on each route was limited. If there were a horde of people competing, accumulating fifteen kills would not be an easy task.

However, with only Bai Ye on this route, he could kill all the tomb-guarding spirits at will, making the task of reaching fifteen not difficult at all.

Moving forward, he soon reached the end, where an open jade door appeared before Bai Ye.

Beyond the jade door was a square stone chamber, roughly a hundred square meters in size. In the center stood a jade coffin, and nothing else.

The moment Bai Ye stepped into the stone chamber…

A black mist materialized all around, and within the mist, human-like silhouettes appeared. Soon, walking unsteadily from the mist were corpse children, no more than a meter tall, about five or six of them, all appearing to be seven, eight, or nine-year-old zombie children.

Bai Ye didn’t hesitate, raising his Aug rifle and pulling the trigger.

The bullets flew forward, but upon hitting the corpse children, they had little effect. The bullets struck the corpse children as if hitting steel plates, emitting metallic clangs.

Zombies were different from ghouls. Ghouls were relatively easy to deal with; a shot to the head would suffice. But zombies were different; they had no obvious weak points. Bullets weren’t useless, but they simply didn't inflict enough damage on them.

“So, foreign things are unreliable. Even dead spirits, domestic products are tougher!”

Bai Ye muttered, quickly detaching the empty magazine, retreating to create distance, and reloading.

At this moment…

*Puff!*

The corpse child before him suddenly opened its small mouth and spewed a puff of purplish-black mist.

Bai Ye dared not delay, quickly dodging backward.

That purple mist was corpse poison, and contact with it meant a quick death.

After evading the purple mist, Bai Ye finished reloading and raised his gun again. However, two corpse children, using the black smoke as cover, had flanked him. They suddenly leaped, their hands extended straight forward, intending to grip his neck.

Bai Ye quickly swung his gun in an arc, smashing the butt of the rifle into the head of one corpse child, knocking it away. He then spun and swept his leg, kicking the other corpse child.

“Ningshuang, Guiding Sword!”

The Ningshuang sword, suspended beside Bai Ye, instantly transformed into a beam of light and shot forward.

*Clang, clang…*

The Ningshuang sword’s light was incredibly fast, slashing repeatedly at the neck of a corpse child, producing clear ringing sounds.

But on the third strike…

*Puff!*

The neck of the corpse child finally succumbed to the sword’s cut. A line of blood appeared on its neck, its head flew off, and its body fell stiffly backward.

Bai Ye seized the opportunity to insert a grenade into the grenade launcher and aimed forward.

*Boom!*

Accompanied by the sound of an explosion, flames roared and rolled.

A massive fireball erupted, blasting the surrounding corpse children away. They were engulfed in black smoke, emitting a charred smell.

Just then…

*Crick, crick!*

A grinding sound suddenly echoed, followed by a strong gust of wind.

The jade coffin in the center began to tremble, and then the lid of the jade coffin suddenly flew up, spinning in the air and hurtling towards Bai Ye.

Bai Ye quickly dodged to the side. The coffin lid smashed into the wall, shattering a piece of it.

Simultaneously…

A chilling wind suddenly swept through the surroundings, mixed with spectral cries.

From within the white jade coffin, a corpse child suddenly straightened up, its hands extended forward, its pair of red eyes fixed on Bai Ye.

This corpse child appeared larger than the others, and its clothing was entirely different. Although tattered, it was evident that it was far more luxurious than that of ordinary corpse children.

Bai Ye immediately raised his gun, aiming at the corpse child, intending to pull the trigger. But at this moment…

Bai Ye discovered that after pulling the trigger, there was no reaction. Furthermore, the body of the Aug rifle was gradually becoming transparent, turning semi-translucent, and then quickly disappearing.

Bai Ye was speechless; the twenty-four-hour usage period for the gacha item had expired.

“Ah!”

At this moment, the corpse child suddenly opened its mouth and let out a ghostly howl, spewing a ball of black smoke from its mouth.

Bai Ye quickly executed a somersault to the side, pushing off the ground with one hand, rolling away. The moment the smoke landed on the corner of the wall, a *hissing* sound began. By the time the black smoke dissipated, a section of the stone slab in the corner had been corroded away, looking quite shocking.

Bai Ye got up from the ground, glanced at the corner of the wall, and grimaced. He could completely imagine what would happen if that ball of black smoke landed on him.

Then…

Bai Ye suddenly lifted his shirt, revealing two boxes of poker cards.
