Black soil emits green smoke

Chapter 95: Bridge Sniper

Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Bridge Sniper

The Qinghe is approximately eighty kilometers away from the Dawn Army Base, and thus not within radar range.

So, upon reaching the edge of Qinghe, Ye Fan still had to rely on his portable radar.

A river passed through and divided most of the Main City District onto the other side.

The direction in which Ye Fan entered the city was the same direction he used before to raid the jewelry store.

Most of the zombies here had already been cleared out, with only a few moving in the surrounding streets.

The convoy drove straight in, quickly dealing with the scattered zombies, reaching the riverside swiftly.

Upon reaching the riverside, Ye Fan was once again shocked by the scene before him.

The densely packed zombies on the riverbanks seemed endless.

Even though he now had over four hundred people with him, fighting these zombies head-on offered no hope at all.

Moreover, Ye Fan didn’t plan on sniping over the bridge; zombie corpses would either fall into the river or be devoured by companions, fostering stronger zombies and yielding no supplies for him.

"Prepare to construct defenses at the bridgehead."

The engineers with their squad quickly sprang into action.

Tracked obstacle-clearing vehicles moved in, commencing urgent construction.

From the surrounding area, broken bricks and cement piles were gathered to construct temporary fortifications.

The defensive structures weren’t built right against the bridge but were set back by about a hundred meters, leaving an open area.

This open space was the grave Ye Fan intended for the zombies.

After all, fighting directly on the bridge meant the zombies’ bodies would roll into the river, preventing Ye Fan from collecting any spoils.

With more people comes more power, and soon the defensive structures were erected.

Four heavy machine guns were set up, and four armored vehicles along with three Raptors were positioned to block the bridge entirely with heavy fire.

Snipers took their vantage points, ready to take out any Mutated Zombies that appeared.

Warriors spread out along the defensive structures, with Company One serving as the first line of defense against the zombie assault.

Once everything was set up, the engineers went into action.

Huang Jie, Luo Jiaxin, and two other engineers rushed to the bridgehead, swiftly taking up their toolboxes.

With the clinking of tools, a temporary bridge repair hut began to emerge.

In the Red Alert game, once an engineer entered the bridge repair hut, they wouldn’t return, effectively losing the unit.

However, with four engineers working together now, this loss was avoided.

Something miraculous happened; the bridge was being repaired at an incredible speed.

Noticing the commotion here, the zombies on the opposite bank roamed anxiously, growling in their eagerness to pounce.

Ye Fan’s mood was tense as well.

Holding his submachine gun, he waited for the moment of battle to arrive.

Since the establishment of the Dawn Army, any previous combat was child’s play compared to this.

From the radar screen, estimates suggested that this section of the city housed around three to four hundred thousand zombies.

Fortunately, they had only this one bridge to cross, as nearby bridges had been destroyed.

"Officer, thirty seconds until bridge repair completion."

"Everyone get ready!"

"Guard platoon, prepare to cover engineer retreat!"

"Heavy Machine Gun Warriors ready!"

"Snipers ready!"

The sound of bolts being racked back created a deadly atmosphere on site.

The broken bridge was rapidly drawing together, this supernatural phenomenon unique to Red Alert engineers.

The bridge repair extended from Ye Fan’s position toward the opposite side, facilitating the engineers’ retreat.

Just as there was just over a meter left for the bridge to connect, things took a drastic turn!

Two Agile Zombies leaped over from the yet unconnected part of the bridge!

"Roar~~~!"

With a sprint akin to a hundred-meter dash, they charged straight for the engineers working on the bridge!

"Sniper!"

"Bang~~~!"

The guard platoon sniper, Chen Chuan, fired.

The dull sound of a shot echoed as one Agile Zombie fell headlong onto the bridge.

However, the other Agile Zombie was rapidly closing in.

The Red Alert engineers didn’t react, continuing their swift repairs on the bridge, which was their mission.

They also trusted their teammates would undoubtedly keep them safe from danger.

Xiaotian and Zhen Tian dashed forward.

The two Three-Star dogs shot out lightning-fast, seizing the Agile Zombie’s arms and ankles from either side.

Roaring for a fight with the dogs, the zombie was met by Ye Fan raising his gun.

Days of practice had paid off, with a sixty percent success rate on moving target bricks, hitting a zombie caught by the dogs was no challenge.

Right hand gripping the gun, left eye aiming!

One shot fired, the bullet piercing straight through the Agile Zombie’s forehead!

The bridge was simultaneously repaired.

"Retreat back!"

The engineers quickly grabbed their toolboxes, donned their hard hats, and ran like mad.

The zombies behind them surged forward like a floodgate had opened, quickly spreading across the bridge.

Their roars shook the heavens, with hideous faces and a reeking stench that would make any normal person guarding with a gun too scared to even shoot.

The Red Alert Soldiers were unmoved, not a single one fired first.

The engineers quickly ran back, diving headfirst into the defense line.

Xiaotian and Heaven-Suppressing easily ran back to Ye Fan’s side.

"Wait until they rush to the end of the bridge!"

The bridge was nearly a hundred meters long, and driven by the lure of food, the zombies crossed the bridge in under twenty seconds.

It felt like squeezing a tube of paste from the top in a sudden burst.

An explosive outbreak!

"Fire!"

The command had barely left his lips before the gunfire erupted!

The gunfire sounded like a continuous line, seamless and without a break.

The bullets from the heavy machine guns were like a golden torrent, each often piercing through several zombie bodies.

The heavy machine gun is the main force of sniping; Ye Fan’s side has four heavy machine guns and eight vehicle-mounted heavy machine guns.

They fired in pairs, taking turns.

Clang clang clang clang ~~~~!

The Army Soldiers and Conscripts began precisely targeting shots.

The zombie corpses were almost instantaneously stacked into a layer.

If it were humans, they would never have the courage to charge into machine gun fire, but zombies have no sense of fear; they trample over their comrades’ bodies to advance.

Even the zombies in front couldn’t stop, because more zombies kept pushing from behind.

One layer of bodies fell, quickly covered by another.

This happened repeatedly, piling up like a small hill.

Atop the small hill, zombies kept appearing, were shot by the warriors, then rolled down, forming new piles of corpse material.

Seen from above, it was a stunning spectacle.

Streams of bullets formed points of light that crazily shot into the horde of zombies.

The zombie horde advanced slowly, yet with an unstoppable momentum.

The pile of corpses grew higher and higher, gradually outpacing even the bullets.

An entire round of ammunition was already two-thirds depleted, and four heavy machine guns had been swapped out.

"Second Company! Forward!"

Second Company Commander Qiao Sanyou swung his gun, and all Second Company soldiers advanced, swiftly taking over First Company’s combat position.

Bullets became dense once more, slightly suppressing the zombies’ frenzied advance.

But it was just a temporary suppression; dozens of zombies could cross the bridge every second, it was impossible to kill them all.

Some zombies were clearly shot down, but without a headshot, they crawled and howled, still advancing, which also diverted the defenders’ focus significantly.

The corpse horde had already reached thirty meters from the defense line!

An Armored Zombie climbed the corpse mound, slipped, and rolled down.

In rolling, it actually evaded many lethal shots.

It got up, just ten meters from the defense line!

The soldiers defending the line had no choice but to shoot.

Intense, rain-like gunfire struck its head.

Even the Iron Armor couldn’t withstand such concentrated shooting and fell dead on site.

Although they killed the Armored Zombie, the firepower arrangement was disrupted, and it attracted some of the fire, allowing subsequent zombies to push forward.

With concentrated fire, they eliminated approaching zombies, yet the influx from the other side of the bridge quickened.

"Rocket launchers, concentrate fire at the bridgehead!"

"Mortars, concentrate fire at the opposite bridgehead!"

"Fire!"

Advisor Zhong’s command echoed, erupting several fireballs at both ends of the bridge.

Flames shot into the sky, consuming large numbers of zombies.

The zombies’ frenzied attack finally encountered some restraint.

Ye Fan exhaled a long breath; indeed, having professionals command was more effective.

Yet he still had questions.

"Chief of Staff Zhong, this restraint is only temporary, right? Soon the zombies will rush back, what should we do next?"

Advisor Zhong patted his chest: "Don’t worry, sir, everything is planned."

Ye Fan’s tension eased a bit: "Oh, it seems the Chief of Staff has everything in hand. Let’s hear it."

"It’s simple, soon you’ll go over yourself, build a wall to block the bridgehead, and we’ll collect the spoils before making any further moves."

Ye Fan paused, looking at the bridgehead that resembled hell on earth, realizing this indeed was a damn good idea.
