Chapter 86: Ruan Chanchan: Who licked it!

"What? You think that I cannot even punish you now?" sneered Chief Xie angrily. "How many times did I tell you just now to stop making trouble? Did you listen to a word that I said to you? Why don’t you go ahead and take over the position of the tribe’s leader and teach me how to deal with these matters? Because the way I am dealing with this situation is certainly not up to your liking. Is it?!"

Chief Xie had indeed told Zhou Laosan to calm down and let Ruan Chanchan first deal with the situation. But the woman was not listening; she kept yelling and shouting as if her life depended on it. How could she not lose her temper? She was the chief of the tribe, and yet Zhou Laosan didn’t listen to a word that she was saying.

"Sister," Xie Wenye softly called out to his sister. However, Chief Xie didn’t even look in the direction of her brother. She had been polite to him and the woman he chose, but this was seriously overstepping their boundaries!

And what was more, she did see Madam Zhou nudging Xie Wenye just now. Her brother might be a fool for that woman, but she was not!

Thank you very much.

"Aunt, I didn’t mean—"

"I don’t want to hear it," snapped Chief Xie. Her face turned a darker shade of red, and she stated in a cold voice, "Don’t make me repeat myself again. I told you to go and kneel, so you should just go and kneel! Why are you making so many excuses, huh?" Chief Xie glared at the woman who was making a fuss without listening to her and, at the same time, glanced at the elders who tried their best to go against her decisions. Don’t think that she did not notice their silent consent when Zhou Laosan was making trouble just now. They could have stopped her, but they didn’t.

She knew that it was because these elders took Ruan Chanchan as a threat to their authority. With someone so young getting the admiration of the tribe, they would have to take a step back, and Chief Xie knew that some of the elders were not willing to do that. They wanted to be the only beacon of hope and reverence; after all, they had enjoyed this treatment for years now. But just because of this small, petty reason, ignoring Ruan Chanchan’s efforts was not right.

Chief Xie, however, didn’t say anything outright. The elders were already afraid that Ruan Chanchan’s awakening might change a lot of things around the tribe, which might ultimately lead to their reverence getting a lot smaller. If she pointed them out by talking about their actions in front of the tribe, maybe that insecurity might get even stronger. Chief Xie could only hope that Zhou Laosan’s punishment would teach them a good lesson. If they still continue to target Ruan Chanchan after this, she was worried that it would only bring more strife and storms to their tribe.

Unfortunately for Chief Xie, the elders didn’t see through her good intentions. In fact, they all blamed her for giving Ruan Chanchan special treatment when she didn’t.

However, before the elders could make a fuss, Ruan Chanchan stepped forward. She looked at the crowd that was standing in front of the cave and said to Chief Xie, "Please step aside; it seems like Nan Wu got an infection; I need to check up on her."

"That’s right, everyone move to one side," said Priestess Yuan as she ushered the crowd to move to the left. She then turned to look at Ruan Chanchan and said to her, "Come and take a look at Ah Wu. See if there is something wrong with her wound, because she suddenly started to burn up.

Ruan Chanchan nodded. Once the crowd had moved to one side, she rushed inside the cave, and sure enough, she saw Nan Wu’s face turning a brilliant shade of red, which proved that the woman was indeed suffering from a high fever. She walked over to where Nan Wu was lying and crouched down. She examined her wound carefully and frowned when she saw that the medicine that she had applied to her wound was licked clean.

No wonder the woman was suffering from a hard fever. This was the reason!

She turned and looked at the Nan family. "Did I not say that no one is allowed to remove the ointment that I applied to her wound? I told you, didn’t I, that you cannot dirty her wound? I warned you all not to lick her wound at all. Why did you not listen to me?" Before Nan Zhi left, Ruan Chanchan told him a few sets of instructions in a hurry. She emphasised to the mer that he was not allowed to dirty Nan Wu’s injury.

How come he didn’t listen to her?

"What?" Nan Zhi was stunned when he heard Ruan Chanchan’s question. He pushed aside his brother and walked close to Nan Wu, and sure enough, he couldn’t see the ointment on his sister’s wound. Angered by the sight, he swivelled around and glared at his siblings, "Who was it? Who did it?"

No one spoke for a while; however, just as Nan Zhi was about to lose his temper, Father Nan spoke up, "It was me." He nervously looked at Ruan Chanchan, who shot him a look of pure exasperation and then said to his son, "I was worried when her wound didn’t heal at once, so I thought that it might heal better if I licked it. I didn’t mean to hurt, Wu."

"Father!"

"Go and bring some water for me, and take it to Zeqiu. Tell him that I asked him to boil the water," said Ruan Chanchan; she didn’t have the time to listen to the quarrel of the Nan family and hurriedly handed the task of bringing the hot water over to Nan Zhi.
