On the afternoon of the fourth day, Jing Feng returned from the Demonic Realm filled with joy.
Jing Yun had accepted! Jing Yun had accepted!!!
He was ecstatic, wishing he could announce this to the whole world, but inside the City Lord’s Mansion, he was met with a series of faces etched with deep resentment.
“You? What’s wrong with all of you? What happened?”
Jiang Ye lay sprawled on the ground, having been awake for three sleepless nights, still unable to catch the beast that delivered the letter.
Zhong Zi and Dong Ling, sitting on stone stools, looked no better, propping up their heads and contemplating life.
“I’m just curious, how did this guy get in? Can he fly, perhaps?”
Xiao Zi stared at the empty tabletop, as if trying to bore a hole through it.
Jing Feng looked at the dejected individuals, his face full of confusion. “Miss Bai, what has befallen the mansion?”
Had he only been gone for three days? Why did everyone look like this upon his return?
It was as if the mansion had been burgled, by a thief they couldn’t catch.
Bai Ran rested her chin on her hand, a look of helplessness on her face. “You can see for yourself.”
Saying this, she handed him the letters from the Night King’s Pavilion. Jing Feng glanced at them suspiciously, then took them and began to read.
“This!” Jing Feng’s eyes widened instantly. When he killed Ding Zi, he had anticipated retaliation from the Assassin’s Pavilion. However, he never expected Ding Zi to be the Pavilion Master of the Night King’s Pavilion.
“Did assassins sneak into the City Lord’s Mansion?”
Bai Ran shook her head.
“Then whom did they harm?”
Bai Ran shook her head.
“Then they must have some scheme, waiting for us to fall into their trap?”
Bai Ran pursed her lips and sighed. “No, not that either.”
Jing Feng froze, blinking in bewilderment. “They didn’t do anything, just delivered a letter?”
“Just delivered a letter.”
After a deathly silence, Jing Feng awkwardly scratched his head.
Just delivered a letter? That couldn’t be right…
“The problem is, we guarded the mansion strictly for three days and nights, yet the assassin managed to deliver the letter inside.”
Xiao Zi spoke through gritted teeth, his lower jaw almost grinding to dust.
Once they found this person, they would make them pay!
On the fourth day, Jing Feng joined the guard detail, patrolling in front of Bai Ran’s room and observing everything around them.
As a result, Bai Ran had no mind to cultivate. She sat at the table, absently pouring herself tea.
Xiao Zi’s eyes were red and bloodshot, still staring intently at the empty tabletop.
“I refuse to believe it! How could that guy still sneak in?”
It was one thing for it to happen once or twice, but to be slapped in the face three or four times! If they didn’t show their strength, did they think they were sick cats?
Finally, under the bright moon and sparse stars, Bai Ran spotted a small, furry hand dart out and then quickly retract.
Then, the letter appeared on the tabletop as if from thin air.
Bai Ran laughed in anger, raising her hand to set up a barrier within the room, trapping the little thing inside.
Xiao Zi rested his chin on his hand, his head bobbing like a chick pecking at grain, half-asleep.
Bai Ran nudged him and pointed to the table. “Did you see that?”
Xiao Zi stared at the suddenly appearing letter, his eyes widening so much that all sleepiness vanished.
“Again! This is unbelievable!”
He and the little ghost had stayed in the room the whole time, never leaving. Yet the letter still appeared on the table out of nowhere!
Bai Ran’s gaze swept over, catching sight of a small ball struggling vigorously in the corner, trying to escape.
The corners of her lips couldn’t help but curve upwards. No wonder her spiritual sense hadn’t detected anyone entering.
So the one delivering the letter wasn’t human after all.
“Look, what’s in the corner by the door?”
Bai Ran’s voice, laced with amusement, rang out. Xiao Zi blinked and looked over.
“Huh?” He rubbed his eyes in disbelief. “Is… is that a sable?”
The little creature had snow-white fur and a long body, shrinking into a round ball.
It extended its tiny paws, scratching frantically at the barrier, seemingly anxious.
It looked back and met Xiao Zi’s purple eyes. It froze, startled, and scratched even faster.
“Little ghost, don’t tell me this thing is the one delivering the letters…”
Xiao Zi pointed at the sable, his brain seeming to have stopped working.
Bai Ran chuckled and nodded. “You guessed right. I saw it with my own eyes.”
“Bang—”
Bai Ran jumped and looked towards the barrier. A circular hole had appeared on it.
And the little sable had vanished.
This sable could actually break through the barrier!
Xiao Zi felt utterly dismayed. He stiffly turned his head and looked at Bai Ran, blinking.
His gaze was clear and naive, as if asking if he was dreaming.
Bai Ran shook her head helplessly. “Perhaps this little creature is just… different.”
Jing Feng and the others guarding outside also heard the commotion inside and rushed in immediately.
“Where is he? Was it the person delivering the letter!”
Jing Feng looked around, not seeing even a ghost of a shadow.
Xiao Zi, however, seemed to have had his soul leave his body. He slumped into a chair. “It was a sable…”
“What’s wrong with him? Is he possessed?” Jiang Ye asked Xiao Zi, looking puzzled.
Bai Ran chuckled. “We did see the person delivering the letter.”
“Who was it! Was it one of Ye Bai or Ye Ran!”
Jing Feng was anxious. He hadn’t sensed any movement, so it had to be one of those two!
Xiao Zi sat up, his mind in a mess. “Did any of you consider that the person delivering the letter might not be human?”
Not human? Then what was it?
The people in the room were completely bewildered by Xiao Zi’s words. “If not human, then what could it be?”
“A spirit beast or a profound beast?” Vermilion Bird’s sixth sense told her it might indeed be some kind of animal that had gained sentience.
For the past few days, their fixed mindset had led them to believe the letter deliverer was powerful, as they could come and go freely under their noses.
They hadn’t considered if it might be some spirit beast or profound beast, sneaking into the City Lord’s Mansion through a dog hole to deliver a letter.
“That’s right, it was a sable with pure white fur.” Bai Ran was almost amused to tears.
“A sable?”
Every face was etched with shock. They had guarded the City Lord’s Mansion day and night for the past few days, and the letter deliverer wasn’t even a person!
“That little sable could break through the barrier I set.” Otherwise, they would have caught the little thing just now.
“Could it be a divine beast?” Jiang Ye asked for no reason.
Vermilion Bird shot him a look. “Do you think divine beasts are common as cabbage, appearing everywhere?”
Xiao Zi chimed in, “It’s not a divine beast, I can confirm that.”
A sable…? Zhong Zi tilted his head, glancing at the small white ball at his feet…
Could it be this guy?
At his feet, a small, snow-white sable gazed at the people in the room with wide eyes.
