Chapter 96 The Courtyard

With a bang, Su Ling’s words were interrupted by the loud noise. She, Gu Shangse, and Yangyang all looked towards the source of the sound.

The two of them stood up at the same time, putting away the things in their hands.

Gu Shangse glanced at Su Ling and said, “You stay here, I’ll go take a look.”

“No need.” Su Ling pointed to the bag Gu Shangse had placed on the bicycle, her voice slightly cold, “Put it on, let’s go together.”

Without wasting any more words, Su Ling had already drawn the Tang saber from its sheath and was heading towards the cake shop where the loud noise had originated, carrying the saber.

Gu Shangse quickly put on his bag and then hurried towards Su Ling.

Arriving beside Su Ling, he stood in front of her and said, “Follow behind me.”

Even though Su Ling was stronger than Gu Shangse, he still wanted to protect her.

The person at the front bore the brunt of the danger.

Although Su Ling was very capable, Gu Shangse was still worried about her and didn't want her to take risks.

Su Ling and Yangyang walked behind Gu Shangse. Before entering the cake shop, she slightly raised her eyes towards the second floor of the cake shop.

The two of them and the dog entered the cake shop. As Gu Shangse had said, the shop was clean, tidy, and hygienic. The electricity was still on, and the shop was filled with cakes.

At a glance, they were dazzling and exquisite.

If it weren't for the doomsday scene outside, one would truly doubt if it was an illusion.

Su Ling and Gu Shangse didn't stay long in the cake shop on the first floor. After looking around the shop and confirming there was no danger, they locked the cake shop door from the inside and looked towards the only exit at the back door.

Walking in from the back door of the cake shop, Su Ling and Gu Shangse quickly noticed something was wrong.

The smell of blood and stench was very strong in the air.

It was so strong that it formed a stark contrast with the aroma of cakes emanating from the shop.

Su Ling and Gu Shangse stood at the door, their field of vision ahead was a courtyard.

The courtyard was planted with fruit trees, bearing seasonal fruits, laden with produce.

Besides fruit trees, the courtyard also had seasonal vegetables, melons, and fruits, as well as a few pots of flowers.

Before the apocalypse, such leisurely living would have been very stylish.

Of course, even after the apocalypse, such a life would still be quite good.

The premise was to ignore the pile of corpses in the center of the yard, as well as the dried bloodstains, brain matter, and bones with shreds of flesh still clinging to them on the ground, things that would cause physical discomfort.

Reaching this point, everything became clear.

Someone had indeed cleaned out the zombies in the cake shop, leaving it in its pre-apocalypse state.

And the corpses that were cleared were all moved to the backyard.

This was a massive undertaking, requiring the combined efforts of at least three survivors to restore everything to its original state.

Looking at the mountains of corpses piled up in the yard, Su Ling raised her head and looked at the cherry and lychee trees laden with fruit.

She was completely unaffected by the scattered limbs and broken bodies, only looking longingly at the seasonal fruits on the trees.

However, the immediate priority was not to crave the things in the yard, but to figure out what was going on.

Su Ling turned around and closed the door behind her. She then pointed at the pile of corpses and said to Gu Shangse, "Throw a flame."

"Wait." Gu Shangse said this, turned, opened the door behind him, and went back into the shop.

When he reappeared, he was holding a bucket of oil. He walked up to the pile of zombie corpses and evenly poured the oil on them.

After pouring the oil, Gu Shangse threw a flame to ignite it and then retreated to stand beside Su Ling.

Watching the flame that ignited as soon as it met the oil, Gu Shangse lowered his voice and asked, "Next, upstairs?"
