Chapter 50: Chapter 50 Invitation
Victoria
"Perfect structure, flawless execution, and remarkable insight into pack dynamics." Madam Hannah’s praise echoed through the elegant classroom as she handed back my final assessment. "I must say, Victoria, when you first arrived at there, I had my... reservations."
Her pause spoke volumes. We both knew what those "reservations" entailed—my mixed blood, my unconventional upbringing, the scandal surrounding my parentage. Everything that had made me an outsider from the moment I stepped through these hallowed doors.
"But," she continued, her stern features softening slightly, "you have proven yourself worthy of the Luna title. Your transformation has been nothing short of extraordinary."
I accepted the portfolio containing my completed work, feeling the weight of accomplishment settle over me. The other students—all purebloods, all born into privilege—watched with expressions ranging from grudging respect to barely concealed resentment. Among them, Lilith’s ice-blue eyes followed my every movement, her perfect posture rigid with tension.
"Thank you, Madam Hannah," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the emotions threatening to overwhelm me. "Your guidance has been invaluable."
The older woman nodded, straightening her already impeccable blazer. "With the situation at the Howlthorne territory becoming increasingly unstable, your timing couldn’t be better. Your pack needs leadership now more than ever."
"I understand my responsibilities," I affirmed, feeling Ava stir within me. She had been growing stronger each day since our bonding, and now she radiated confidence through our shared consciousness. "I won’t let them down."
"Very well." Madam Hannah addressed the class. "Ladies, this concludes today’s session. Remember, a Luna’s grace under pressure defines her pack’s stability. You’re dismissed."
As the students gathered their belongings, I made a decision that surprised even myself. Walking directly to Lilith’s desk, I waited until she acknowledged me with a cool glance.
"Would you join me for lunch?" I asked quietly.
Her perfectly shaped eyebrows arched in surprise. "Excuse me?"
"Lunch," I repeated, keeping my voice even. "There’s a café just off campus. I believe we have matters to discuss that would benefit us both."
Suspicion flashed across her flawless features. "What could we possibly have to discuss, Victoria?"
I leaned closer, lowering my voice. "The future of the Howlthorne Pack... and your place in it."
Lilith had tied her fortunes to Enzo, expecting to become Luna of a prosperous territory. Now, with him missing, her carefully constructed future hung in limbo.
I was absolutely certain she would accept my invitation.
"Fine," she said after a moment’s consideration. "One hour."
* * *
The café buzzed with activity—mostly human customers mixed with a few wolves sensitive enough to recognize what we were. Lilith sat across from me, her posture perfect as she delicately stirred her untouched tea.
"I appreciate you coming," I began, watching her carefully.
"Let’s skip the pleasantries," she countered. "What do you want, Victoria? To gloat? To remind me that my position is compromised with Enzo gone?"
I took a sip of my coffee, letting the bitter warmth fortify me. "Actually, I wanted to offer you an opportunity."
Her laugh was sharp, disbelieving. "An opportunity? From you? The half-breed who—"
"The acting Alpha of the Howlthorne territory," I cut in, my voice firm. Ava growled her approval within me. "Whether either of us likes it, that’s the reality we’re facing."
Lilith’s fingers tightened around her cup. "You have no right to that position."
"Perhaps not traditionally," I acknowledged. "But my father’s will grants me legal authority, and Leonard Moretti’s support gives me the muscle to enforce it."
At the mention of Leo’s name, Lilith’s scent shifted subtly—fear mingling with respect. Everyone in wolf society knew better than to cross the Shadow Pack Alpha.
"What’s your point?" she asked, her voice slightly less confident.
"I want you to come to Howlthorne territory with me today," I said directly. "As Enzo’s chosen mate, your presence would help stabilize the pack. Show them there’s continuity, even in crisis."
Surprise flickered across her face. "You want me by your side? After everything?"
"This isn’t about our personal history," I explained. "It’s about what’s best for the pack. They know you. They respect you. And right now, they’re frightened and confused."
Lilith studied me, searching for deception. "What’s in it for me?"
"Security," I answered honestly. "With Marcus Grimwood targeting everyone connected to my father, you’re potentially in danger too. At the compound, you’d have protection."
Her composure faltered briefly. "You think he’d come after me? But I’m not blood-related to Dominic..."
"But you are connected to Enzo, who is currently in Marcus’s custody. That makes you valuable."
Lilith’s gaze dropped to her tea. For the first time since I’d known her, I glimpsed vulnerability beneath her perfect exterior. "What happens if Enzo doesn’t return?" she whispered.
The question hung between us—the fear she’d likely been carrying since news of his disappearance broke. In wolf society, an unmated female’s status was precarious at best. Without Enzo, Lilith would lose not just a mate, but her entire future.
"I can’t promise what will happen," I said gently. "But I can promise you won’t face it alone. Whatever our differences, we’re both Howlthorne women now."
She looked up sharply. "You truly believe that? Even after how I’ve treated you?"
I thought about Leo, about how he’d taught me strength didn’t always mean domination. Sometimes, it meant extending a hand when you could clench a fist.
"Pack survival transcends personal grievances," I said, echoing Madam Hannah’s teaching. "The Moon Goddess demands unity in times of crisis."
Lilith was silent for a long moment, weighing her options. I could almost see the calculations behind her eyes—the risks of aligning with me versus the danger of remaining isolated.
"What if..." Her voice wavered slightly. "What if I’m not strong enough? This isn’t what I prepared for."
The admission clearly cost her. Lilith had always presented herself as invulnerable, the perfect pureblooded wolf.
"None of us were prepared for this," I admitted. "But we adapt. We grow stronger. That’s what wolves do."
She met my gaze, her ice-blue eyes searching mine. "And if I choose to come with you—what exactly would my role be?"
"You’d retain your status as Enzo’s chosen mate," I explained. "You’d help me communicate with pack members, maintain traditions, keep morale steady. Essentially, you’d be a bridge between my leadership and their expectations."
"And when Enzo returns?" she pressed.
"If," I corrected gently. "And if he does, we’ll navigate that situation when it comes. But know this—I won’t allow anyone, including my brother, to harm the pack through negligence or cruelty again."
Ava growled her agreement, the sound almost audible in my chest. Lilith’s eyes widened slightly—she’d sensed my wolf’s presence, stronger than ever before.
"You’ve changed," she observed, a hint of respect in her voice.
"We all have to," I replied.
She straightened her shoulders, decision made. "When do we leave?"
"Now," I said, signaling for the check. "Beta Tiny’s waiting outside with the car."
Lilith gathered her designer purse, a fleeting smile crossing her face. "Your Beta terrifies me, you know."
"He has that effect on most people," I admitted with a small laugh.
As we walked out together, I felt curious gazes following us—the unlikeliest of allies moving in tandem. Outside, Tiny’s massive form leaned against the sleek SUV, his expression impassive as he opened the door for us.
"Everything good, Luna?" he asked, his deep voice rumbling.
The title still felt strange to my ears, but I nodded confidently. "Yes, Tiny. We’re ready."
As the vehicle pulled away from the curb, I caught Lilith watching me with newfound curiosity.
"Luna," she repeated softly. "Do the Shadow Pack acknowledge you as such already?"
"Leo does," I clarified. "The rest follow his lead."
She nodded thoughtfully. "Your father would be proud, I think. Despite everything... Dominic Howlthorne valued courage above bloodlines."
The unexpected sentiment caught me off guard, a lump forming in my throat. "Thank you for saying that."
Lilith turned to look out the window, her profile elegant against the passing scenery. "Don’t thank me yet, Victoria. The hard part is still ahead—convincing a territory of wolves to follow a half-blood and a mate without her Alpha."
She was right, of course. But as the city buildings gave way to the forested outskirts that marked Howlthorne territory, I felt a strange sense of homecoming. This land was in my blood, human and wolf alike. And with Leo’s strength behind me, Ava’s power within me, and even Lilith’s unexpected alliance beside me, I was finally ready to claim what had always been mine.
"Then we better make quite an entrance," I replied, feeling the weight of my father’s legacy settling comfortably on my shoulders for the first time.
