Chapter 579: Chapter 579: At Times Like This, It’s All About Who Acts Better

Facing the unfriendly gaze of Lai Wenyan, just as Lai Shengxia was about to respond, Ouyang Qian spoke first: "Ah Li is young, and inevitably naive. She really did go a bit too far this time. Don’t be too angry. The most important thing right now is to make sure mom is alright."

"Did I ask you?!" Lai Wenyan interrupted her.

For a moment, Ouyang Qian was at a loss for words.

Lai Wenyan looked at her ominously before turning his gaze back to Lai Shengxia’s face: "Did you actually see Tang Li putting the plasma and dried snake on your grandmother’s bed?"

"..." Lai Shengxia clenched the shoulder bag she carried.

The previous Lai Wenyan would never cling to details like this; his questioning now clearly indicated some other suspicion.

Seeing her silence, Lai Wenyan turned his head and looked at the nanny taking care of Old Madam Lai: "You say it! What exactly happened?"

"I helped the old madam take off her jacket and pants then left the room," the nanny spoke, glancing at Ouyang Qian and Lai Shengxia before continuing, "It was just a few minutes later when I heard the Old Madam’s scream from downstairs. By the time the other servants and I reached upstairs, the young miss was just coming out of the bedroom. The Old Madam was still shouting, so we hurried over."

Then, they pushed the door open and immediately saw Old Madam Lai huddled in a corner like a frightened quail, trembling all over. The young maid was busy tidying up the bed when she discovered the dried snake was not a toy, screamed, and threw it to the ground, then bent over to vomit.

"So, none of you actually saw who put the items there."

Lai Wenyan concluded directly.

He had received a call and returned home to inquire how Old Madam Lai could have fainted. The household servants hesitated and said "Miss Tang". Although Lai Shengxia did not speak up, she also acquiesced to the servants’ accusations against Tang Li. Thinking about it now, those servants are used to pushing things onto Tang Li whenever something happens!

"There’s no evidence; indeed we can’t rush to blame people." Ouyang Qian already changed the topic: "Ah Li finally came home, she wouldn’t engage in such pranks. We will re-investigate this matter. If it was done by one of the household servants, we must dismiss them."

Lai Shengxia then spoke up: "Mom is right, we cannot afford such prank-playing servants in the Lai Family. If it truly wasn’t Ah Li who did it, we cannot wrong her. Regardless of the usual discord between Ah Li and Grandma, after all, they’re connected by blood and flesh, I also don’t believe Ah Li would scare Grandma like that."

Lai Wenyan watched the mother and daughter sing in harmony, treating him like a fool, pointed at Ouyang Qian and Lai Shengxia with his finger, and turned to leave the emergency building.

Soon after, Ouyang Qian’s cellphone rang.

It was Lai Wenyan, asking her to come to the parking lot.

Seeing her mother’s unusual expression, Lai Shengxia asked what was wrong.

"It’s nothing." Ouyang Qian put away her cellphone: "I’ll go to the restroom, you stay here for now."

Ouyang Qian walked around the corner and exited through the south side door.

As the evening darkened around six, the hospital road was nearly empty.

The parking lot was in a secluded location.

Lai Wenyan stood beside his car, furiously enraged. As soon as Ouyang Qian approached, he backhanded her with such force that her eyes reddened and her body trembled, yet she dare not utter a word.

"Seeing me and my daughter turn against each other, are you satisfied?"

"I didn’t." Ouyang Qian denied, reaching out to pull on Lai Wenyan’s suit: "You misunderstood me, Wenyan."

Lai Wenyan pushed her away, disregarding her staggering, and sternly warned: "Control yourself and Xiaxia, or else, don’t blame me for being unkind!"
