Chapter 97: Chapter 33: Nord Bow
Duncan thought the enemy would send reinforcements or bring top experts from the Barbarian Race to deal with him. However, he didn’t expect them to be so straightforward. After plundering Devon Town once again, all the Barbarian soldiers withdrew from this land.
They relocated to the next, more open town stronghold and stationed heavy guards, even recruiting a batch of elite Forest Hunters.
Devon Town only had a garrison of about two or three hundred, and over two days, Duncan killed more than thirty, even beheading Nidhron of the Blood Axe.
The enemy, unable to withstand the disturbance, simply retreated to a more easily defensible position.
However, as time passed, legends about Duncan quickly spread across Great Britain after their retreat, especially after they learned he had shot the King of Kent, the speed of these tales became astonishing.
It wasn’t only the Britons spreading it. The Saxons, Angles, Jutes, and various branches of the Germanic tribes were all talking about it, even spreading towards the European continent.
That was one of the kings of the Germanic Barbarians, who suddenly died like that.
An intriguing point.
Numerous bizarre rumors, after fermentation through spreading, began to change again, linking Duncan’s identity gradually with the legendary Avalon. Some said he was an Elf Ranger from Avalon, others said he was a mortal favored by the Avalon Fairies, an aide invited from the European continent to help the Britons against the invading Barbarians.
A mass of rumors continued to evolve, but they always maintained some connection with the Mist-covered Avalon. As a result, the existence of Avalon was frequently mentioned alongside the tales of Duncan.
Until one day.
The remaining Druid faith on Great Britain, the Celtic priests, began openly acknowledging the person who shot the King of Kent had deep ties with Avalon. Thus, at this moment, myth became reality. The Britons were excited and proud, as if witnessing the birth of a legend with their own eyes.
Of course, Duncan was unaware of these events at the time, as he was busy receiving the Exile Legion brought over by Anya from the Gaul Region.
The first batch was two hundred in total.
Led by Kvito, mainly consisting of young and strong individuals from the Exile brigand camp, the weapons and armor were on par with the Empire’s Border Defense Army, with a few elite equipped with the Field Army’s scale armor. Maybe because of the equipment’s empowerment, Kvito now was also marked as a ’Private Legion Commander’ as a one-star unit.
When the Crow Queen Triss saw Duncan, she beamed with joy. However, as she approached him, she couldn’t help but show a trace of doubt, sniffing lightly and softly said, "You’ve met the Lake Fairy here?"
Duncan nodded frankly.
The Crow Queen Triss gazed at him for a moment, her eyes falling on the battle bow behind him, astonishment on her face: "The Nord Bow?"
It seemed she recognized this battle bow.
Duncan took off the battle bow and handed it to her. The Crow Queen Triss gently caressed it, sighing faintly: "I didn’t expect they would actually give this bow to you."
The rapid rise of Monotheism made life difficult not just for her alone.
The Crow Queen Triss returned the Nord Bow to Duncan, seemingly casually said, "Since they gave it to you, keep it well."
"If you need anything, go find Anya. The Lake Fairy isn’t as simple as you think."
"They are the Primordial Spirits of the Age of Spirits."
The Druid faith became considerably gentler after being assimilated into Roman and Greek cultures, whereas the early Celtic mythology heavily revered human blood sacrifices.
When the Empire established provinces on Great Britain, they directly suppressed many native tribes, destroyed sacred mountains and temples, disrupted holy ceremonies, and obliterated countless true and pseudo-gods of the Celtic mythologies.
The Avalon’s fairies.
They were the survivors of that era, and after the Empire took control of the British Province, their image gradually transformed into something resembling the Nymph fairies in ancient Greek mythology.
Before that, however, they were goddesses enjoying blood sacrifices in Celtic mythology.
These were things Duncan didn’t know, but after hearing the Crow Queen Triss’s words, he couldn’t help but nod thoughtfully.
It seemed even Divine Spirits could face extinction.
This was normal too, as in Eastern mythology, the supreme deities of various eras continued to evolve over time.
