Chapter 132: Chapter 132: Enemies Meet On Narrow Roads
Huo’s Villa — Evening
Yue Ning stepped out of the bathroom with a towel in her hand. Her gaze landed on Huo Feng who was on the bed, a tab in his hands, and she squinted.
"What did you and my dad discuss?" She asked, her voice cutting through the silence.
Huo Feng raised his head up. Tilting his head, he removed his reading glasses.
"We didn’t talk much," he answered.
Yue Ning’s brows raised. She didn’t believe a word. He said. They had spent shoot forty-five minutes in the study. Surely, they must have discussed something... and it must have been important.
"Don’t have such a curious expression." Huo Feng chuckled softly, placing his tablet aside. "We only had wine to drink, then we discussed a bit."
Yue Ning said nothing, and only climbed onto the bed. Huo Feng chuckled once again, before pulling her into his arms.
Pinching her cheeks, he said, "you don’t look good with your brows scrunched."
Yue Ning puffed up her cheeks, and swatted his hands away. "You’re making fun of me."
Huo Feng let out a short, surprised, exaggerated gasp. "Why would you say that?"
Yue Ning stared at him pointedly.
"Alright, my bad. Don’t be angry." He apologized. "But I was serious when I said you don’t look good with a frown on your face."
"Now, sleep." He said, cutting her off when she wanted to speak. He placed a kiss on her forehead in the process.
Yue Ning’s shoulders relaxed, and she closed her eyes, closing drifting to sleep.
Looking at the girl who had already slept in his arms, Huo Feng’s lips curved softly. "You don’t have to worry, Ning Ning. I’ll protect you..." it was a silent vow, carried by the silence of the night.
---------------------
Two days later, Yue Ning sat with Huo Yan, papers scattered on the table.
"Sister-in-law, do you think they’d show up?" Huo Yan asked as she scribbled on a piece of paper. "They were quite disappointed the last time." She murmured.
Yue Ning paused in writing. She hit the tip of the pen on her chin for a while, seemingly lost in thoughts.
"If they show up, then they do. If not..." she stopped. "Then we know we tried. I’ll only look for something else to do."
Huo Yan looked at her nonchalant expression, and her heart twisted. ’Please, honor my Sister-in-law’s invitation.’ She prayed fervently in her heart.
"I think this is the last one." Huo Yan stated as they finished scribbling on the last paper.
She let out a sigh, twisting her neck to relieve the tension.
Yue Ning looked at the girl who was visibly exhausted, then she suggested. "Would you like to go out for a cup of coffee?"
Huo Yan snapped her head towards her, and a smile appeared on her face. "Yes, please. I think I need it." She accepted.
"Now that I think of it, you don’t attend lectures that well." Yue Ning leaned closer, and whispered into her ears. "Is there something I don’t know?"
Huo Yan chuckled, scratching her head awkwardly. "Sister-in-law, I attend the online classes. I only go to college when it’s necessary."
Yue Ning raised her brows teasingly. "is this what is called privilege?"
Huo Yan laughed softly. "If you put it that way, Sister-in-law."
Yue Ning’s lips curved faintly. "You should freshen up while I do the same."
------------------------
Yue Ning and Huo Yan walked into a coffee shop. They had their arms locked, and took an inconspicuous seat close to the window.
A waiter approached them with smiles seeing how well dressed they were. "What may I get for you, ladies?"
"Frappucino," Huo Yan replied, then turned to Yue Ning. "What about you, Sister-in-law?"
"A cup of mocha for me." Yue Ning replied simply.
"What about pastries? Would you like some pastries?" The waiter eagerly asked.
The two ladies exchanged glances, and they nodded simultaneously.
A few minutes later, their order was served.
Huo Yan bit into a croissant, and her face lit up. She turned to Yue Ning who was still hesitating.
"Try it, Sister-in-law. They taste good." Huo Yan urged.
Seeing the smile on the younger girl’s face. She took a bite, and she nodded.
Both of them continued to enjoy themselves... but happiness didn’t last long. Enemies—enemies they said met on narrow roads.
All of a sudden, the most uncommon duo walked through the door—Xu Yuelan and Yue Chen.
When they walked into the shop, they gained the attention of the customers.
Xu Yuelan’s heels clicked softly as they walked into the shop. Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks when her gaze landed on someone.
Yue Ning sensed someone’s gaze on her, and she slowly raised her head up. Her eyes met with Xu Yuelan’s, and it seemed like the air crackled with intensity.
Xu Yuelan’s smile widened, and she walked straight to Yue Ning’s table. Yue Chen saw this, and her heart felt stifled, but she still followed behind. Her little baby bump was also evident.
"Cousin, I didn’t expect you to be here." Xu Yuelan’s voice rang out softly.
Yue Ning calmly placed her cup on the table. "Cousin still has that sweet tone even though we haven’t met for a while now."
Huo Yan’s eyes darted between both of them before it landed on Yue Chen. Her brows shot up instantly.
"I didn’t expect someone to be pregnant without even being married," her voice was deliberately low, but due to the proximity of the four ladies, they clearly heard her words.
Yue Chen’s lips parted slightly, but no sound came out. Her fingers instinctively moved to cover her small, rounded belly.
The movement was faint, yet it was enough to betray her fear. She kept her eyes low, unable to meet Yue Ning’s calm but piercing gaze.
Yue Ning watched her for a long, silent moment before turning her attention back to Xu Yuelan, her tone still light but laced with a sharp undercurrent.
"Cousin, I see you’ve been busy," she said, her lips curling into a faint smile. "You are friends with Yue Chen."
Xu Yuelan’s expression stiffened. "You don’t have to concern yourself with my affairs, Lu Ning," she replied, voice sugar-coated yet brittle at the edges.
Yue Ning leaned back in her seat, lifting her cup once again. "Oh, but I’m not concerned. Merely curious how some people always find the most... interesting ways to make an appearance."
A thick silence fell between them, only interrupted by the faint clinking of cups in the background.
Huo Yan tilted her head, her expression smug. "Looks like the pastries aren’t the only sweet things in this shop today."
Xu Yuelan’s jaw tightened. "Huo Yan, you—"
"Careful," Yue Ning interjected softly, her tone still calm yet commanding. "This isn’t the place for drama."
Her eyes flicked toward Yue Chen again. It was a cold, brief glance that made the other woman’s breath hitch. Then, as if nothing had happened, she looked away.
Xu Yuelan finally straightened her posture and forced a smile. "Enjoy your coffee, Cousin. I do hope you and your family have a nice time."
Yue Ning’s lips curved faintly. "I will. You should too, I heard from a little birdie that you’re about to get married."
That last remark hit like a dart. Xu Yuelan’s composure cracked, her hand tightening around her clutch. She gave a curt nod before turning away, dragging Yue Chen with her unable to bear Yue Ning’s sharp jabs.
When they were gone, Huo Yan exhaled in relief. "Sister-in-law... that was intense."
Yue Ning took another sip of her mocha, eyes fixed on the window. "Some people only understand silence when it’s sharp enough to cut."
