Between doubting his uncle’s abilities and remembering that, after all, he was a Lockward and one of the most powerful in the Empire, his mind seemed to reach a dead end.
"Young Lord Louis? Are you all right?" Robert asked suddenly.
Louis finally snapped out of his shock and apologized. "Oh, I’m sorry. I was engrossed in watching an interesting fight," he said.
"Haha, young people often do that, no need to apologize."
Louis nodded. "Uncle Dan..." he said carefully. "I haven’t seen him recently, although we have corresponded through letters. He’s fine, but it seems that family matters have kept him from going out these past few weeks; he’s a busy man."
"Oh, I’m glad he’s doing well then. I hope I can invite you and Mr. Dan for a drink one of these days, as I’m interested in discussing business," he said.
"Haha, although I don’t usually drink alcohol, since you’re the one inviting me, then I’ll accept."
Just then, Rebecca stepped in between them. "Enough of this unnecessary chatter," she said, slightly annoyed. "Let’s bet," she said, looking at Louis.
"Big bets?" he asked.
"At least a few hundred million. There are plenty of fights to bet on, so we can entertain ourselves for a while."
"Are you planning on betting against me in my own fights too?"
"No, I’m not an idiot. I know you’re strong and you won’t have any trouble against the opponents you’ll face in this instance, since you’ll only be facing a few first and second years. It’s clear to me that you only come to compete with the seniors," she replied frankly.
"Tsk, in the end, my source of free money doesn’t want to risk so much," he complained.
"I’m not an idiot to go around giving away money unnecessarily."
"I thought that was something you already did at Velfast. You have a reputation for being the Number One Spender in the Underworld, you know?"
"Who the hell dares to give me that name?! I’ll have them shot!" she suddenly shouted. Between Louis’s jokes and that ugly name suddenly appearing, she really lost her temper and kicked the chair.
Louis stared at her. "I made it up, my men are spreading it around. Don’t you like it? It suits you," he said, smiling with clear mockery toward her.
She frowned and sighed, realizing there was nothing she could do. That guy was just mocking her, and she had fallen right into his trap.
So she turned her attention away and looked at the fights, looking for one to bet on.
"I don’t see your albino friend. Isn’t she participating?" she asked, surprised.
He remembered her as one of the top 10 students currently enrolled, so how could she not participate?
Louis frowned. "Right, where is Laura?" he thought, puzzled.
It was impossible for her beautiful albinism not to stand out here, but he hadn’t seen her since they parted ways in the dressing rooms.
He scanned each of the small combat arenas, looking for her, but her white hair was nowhere to be seen.
Still, as he looked at each silhouette, he suddenly found a recognizable one. Such a perfect figure, few women in the academy had it. Although there was no trace of her hair or features, as she was wearing full body armor, her movements were all too recognizable.
"Laura? What are you doing fighting in full body armor and without your weapons?" He stood there stunned, staring at her.
But he quickly learned that she didn’t want her identity revealed; she was even using a nickname to participate. Only the teachers knew she was Laura, and now he understood why.
She was fighting with pure physical strength and magic, using only a fraction of her total capacity. Even so, she was doing well, although with only this display of strength, it was impossible for her to reach the top 10, even after leveling up for a whole month.
She needed to show more of what she had.
Louis didn’t answer her about Laura because he didn’t want to reveal her situation. Instead, he looked at the rest of the arenas, then looked back at Laura’s and smiled.
"500 million on arena 035 that the fight will end in 1 minute and that person in the big armor will be declared the winner," he said suddenly, looking at Rebecca to see if she would take the bet.
She frowned and looked at the fight he was talking about. She had seen it before, but the clumsy movements of the person in armor made her realize that it would end very easily for the other person.
What was the point of betting there? That’s why she had kept going straight.
But now this guy was telling her that he was betting precisely because of that clumsy armor. What the hell was he thinking?
"He must have seen something I didn’t," she thought, but no matter how much she looked or analyzed, she was sure that armor was going to lose.
"Fine. Then 500 million. This doesn’t make sense, but if you want to give me that..." she said, but halfway through, she fell silent.
In the arena, the person in armor suddenly went into a frenzy and struck his opponent with precision and efficiency. In about 30 seconds, the time it took to complete the minute Louis had said, the man was knocked out.
"Your betting skills are certainly quite poor, little Rebecca. So far, you’ve only lost to me, over and over again," he taunted.
Although she knew she had been deceived or perhaps he had cheated in some way, she had no proof to prove it, so she ended up sighing and giving him the money.
"Bastard," she said and looked at another fight she had been watching before. "500 on that one, I’ll take the red," she said.
"No time?"
"No time."
"Sigh, you made a good choice on this one, girl. But since I just beat you, I might as well give you back your 500 million," he said and agreed to bet on the one on the other side wearing green clothes.
The guy in green was going to lose, that was for sure. He was injured and on his last legs. His legs were wobbling. The referee hadn’t interfered because he wasn’t out of the fight yet, but he was one punch away from being knocked out, so as soon as he placed his bet, Louis lost interest and looked at Laura to see what she was doing.
"Damn it. How the hell can you lose in that situation?" Rebecca shouted, clearly angry about something two minutes later.
Louis raised one of his eyebrows and looked back at the ring. For a moment, he almost lost her among the crowd, but he found her because he noticed that the guy in green was still staggering forward. Not only was he staggering, but he had also thrown his opponent and had a pretty bad wound on his chest.
"Huh?" He watched the fight in shock. "How did that guy win? He looked like a zombie a moment ago, but now his opponent is lying on the ground..."
Louis couldn’t help but sigh. "God, I really can’t underestimate the participants in this tournament," he thought, taking note of this.
But suddenly another 500 million was in his hand.
"Tsk, some things go right once in a while," he thought, although he didn’t really feel all that good because 500 of those came from cheating.
Just then, the combat arena where he was fighting flashed.
"An opponent?" He looked to see who it was. It was a relatively skinny young man with some muscle tone who had a sword hanging from his waist.
He looked just as weak as the previous one, so he quickly lost interest, though he got up to go to the arena.
"Want to bet another one?" he said, looking at Rebecca. "A billion that I can knock him down in one move, that’s my bet," he said.
She stared at him as if he were stupid. "Why would I want to bet on something I’m obviously going to lose? What should I bet? That you’ll knock him out in two? That weakling won’t even last one punch," she said.
"Well, he might last two punches. In a fight, nothing is written before it starts," he replied.
"Tsk, in a fight with such a difference, everything is written," she complained, but shrugged. "Fine, I’m feeling generous today. You want another billion? Okay, I’ll take your bet. You’ll knock him out in three punches, right? Go fight."
Louis laughed. "Haha, well then we’ll see how it goes," he said.
Minutes later, he was standing in the ring and his opponent launched his attack.
"Weak, too weak." Louis quickly moved to the side and came up behind him.
He hit him hard on the shoulder, dislocating it and sending him to the edge of the sand, though not knocking him out.
Rebecca frowned when she saw this. "Huh?"
But Louis reappeared behind the guy again, and just when everyone thought he was going to throw him, he kicked him, sending him flying to the other side.
Strangely, that kick didn’t hurt the man, who looked at him in shock.
"You... What are you doing?" he asked.
"Sorry, kid. I won’t hurt you, but you’ll have to take three hits," he said carefully and kicked him again in the stomach, which also didn’t hurt him.
It looked like he was made of rubber, but this time the guy flew through the air and landed on the other side of the arena, finally out.
Louis smiled softly and looked toward Rebecca’s VIP room, a strange smile on his face.
"That bastard." She punched her chair.
"Hahahaha..." Robert suddenly started laughing. "He’s clearly mocking you," he said.
Even Miss Evergreen had noticed.
"Damn it, I know." She complained and got up to go complain to him.
"Bring him over, I want to bet him on something interesting," Robert said, smiling softly.
