Chapter 508: Chapter 23 Abrupt End_3
“…that person, why did he kill his own men?” the girl went on to ask about another utterly unrelated matter.
This was a very interesting question involving Budman’s motives for his crimes.
The first three people who died were all from Morton, and a quick inquiry with Brother would make it clear… After visiting Morton, their horizons had broadened in many ways, such as understanding the modus operandi of Morton’s official personnel, and small backdoors in several databases.
So when Brother told him that the three victims were most likely Morton’s spies, Gongsun Ce was not surprised at all. Organizations that can survive in this place all have backers, and the better they mix, the stronger their backers are. The high ranks of the Mutual Assistance Association, this slack organization, were not without Empire elites, and the Light Core was simply a one-man show by that bastard Aorus; it was obvious that he had the backing of powerful families from the Union. And as for Wing of Death, it must have been, and could only have been, the Country.
The only question was how tightly the Country had controlled this organization, whether they stood behind the skeletons or behind Budman… And as the collapse of the Country had taken place, everything from the past had turned to smoke. With Morton’s current decline, who knew if the murders were an internal organizational cleanup or a reshuffle arranged by someone?
Therefore, Gongsun Ce said, “Don’t ask anymore, it has nothing to do with us. We finally stayed away from the troubled waters, so don’t get your feet wet again.”
The young lady silently finished her half cup of coffee, and only when Kardesia came over again did she say, “Gongsun Ce is very mature.”
The gray-haired boy coughed violently, he had choked.
Kardesia couldn’t stop laughing while holding onto her stomach, almost spilling her coffee.
“He? Mature?!” Kardesia laughed till tears came out, her voice even breaking, “Why?!”
“Cough cough cough! Mr. Gongsun, am I not behaving like a good senior?!” Gongsun Ce pounded on his chest, “What she said means I’m doing pretty well, you’re not allowed to laugh, I’m warning you not to laugh anymore!!”
Kardesia was laughing so hard she could barely breathe.
“Oh my! Let me see… I should really show you this guy’s old photos, wait for half a minute…”
“Stop! Leave me some dignity in front of our new friend!!”
Gongsun Ce quickly tried to stop his old friend, while Qin Qianbai peeked around, clearly very curious.
“Enough, that’s it!” Gongsun Ce said helplessly, “Let’s not talk about the dark history of the past, okay? Otherwise, I’ll start talking about the time Miss Kardesia followed the trend and tied her hair in pigtails—”
“I’d love to see it, are there photos?” Qin Qianbai asked eagerly.
“No photos! That never happened!” Kardesia screamed, “Shut up, you big mouth!”
“Look at that, talk about double standards!”
·
In the following hour, they helped Qin Qianbai pick a set of cheap furniture and found a small vehicle to send it all away.
Kardesia bought a bunch of random trinkets for herself and happily said goodbye to the two, heading towards her home. Gongsun Ce dropped the neighbor off in the Thorn District and pulled out his pocket watch to check the time.
“I have something to do tonight,” Gongsun Ce said, pushing up his glasses, “I think you can control yourself now?”
Qin Qianbai nodded silently.
“I have understood the situation here and will not make such simple mistakes again.”
“Those words are reassuring to hear, if we ignore the fact that you didn’t even have a cellphone thirty minutes ago,” Gongsun Ce sighed, “Watch yourself and don’t cause trouble, remember to call the police for small issues, and for big ones, call me or Kardesia. Thanks to you, I feel like I’m being a single father—hey, don’t hit me! Alright, I’m off, sort yourself out!”
Gongsun Ce grinned and ducked as his neighbor threw a pebble at him, and flew up into the sky.
He was not worried at all about the new friend’s safety, firstly because even without using her superpower she was tough enough to be considered the top boss of the city, and secondly because the young and hardworking members from the Qin family were still secretly protecting Qin Qianbai.
Gongsun Ce flew to a street two blocks away, made sure the young lady was not following, turned several circles, then headed to the previously agreed meeting point. Qin An in his black clothes and green pants was standing in front of a fruit stand, holding a plum.
“You really did us a favor today, Brother Gongsun,” Qin An nodded, “I’d like to invite you to a simple meal to express my gratitude, and also talk about Little Qian’s matters, if that’s alright with you?”
“Please don’t ‘you’ me, I’m really not used to it,” Gongsun Ce waved his hand, “I have no problem having dinner with you, but… I guess, this girl wasn’t just sent here because of her superpower.”
He pondered the young lady’s behavior, and confidently said, “She’s a runaway from home, right?”
Just from the bitter smile on Qin An’s face, he knew he had hit the mark.
