Chapter 323: Chapter 321 Going Home and Working Hard [Update 1]
Liam listened to these words, utterly confused, feeling like a heavy stone pressed down on his heart, making it hard to breathe, as if he could no longer see sunlight in his life.
Beside him, Maya furrowed her brow tightly, swallowing hard.
Maya was well aware of her own health condition, and the doctor’s words were within her expectations, but since returning, she hadn’t consistently taken her medication, holding onto a glimmer of hope.
Therefore, she took a deep breath and said, "Director Parker, since I came back, I haven’t been taking my medication much, and it’s been more than a month since I last took it before I started feeling nauseous, so if I’m pregnant, it shouldn’t be a big issue, right!"
"Maya, aren’t you being reckless? If you don’t take your medication, how will the condition be controlled? It finally became stable, what if it worsens? Even if you haven’t taken medicine for over a month, you can’t be absolutely sure that the child is unaffected, so you need to prepare for the worst." The doctor looked at Maya, who was eager to keep the baby, with some helplessness.
Then, he continued, "Moreover, can you guarantee that during your pregnancy, you won’t experience any emotional stress or relapse? What if you do? That’s concerning two lives."
Maya listened to the doctor’s reminder and smiled at him, saying, "Director Parker, don’t worry! Such a thing won’t happen."
Maya hadn’t told the doctor that, in fact, she had already had a breakdown a few days ago. She had thought she was almost healed and such a collapse wouldn’t happen again. Unexpectedly, a year later, her emotions were easily triggered by Liam.
But she was certain that no matter what happened, she would protect the baby in her womb and not let him get hurt.
The director looked at Maya’s determined attitude and shook his head helplessly, saying, "Keeping the child might not be a bad thing. Your illness started with the child and perhaps the key to resolving it also lies with the child. If you can deliver safely and healthily, that would be the best outcome."
Behind Maya, Liam listened to their conversation, bewildered. From their discussion, he could clearly sense that Maya’s illness was severe and had been ongoing for a long time.
He wanted to ask the director about Maya’s health condition, but seeing them continually discuss the matter of the child prevented him from stepping forward to interrupt.
It was only when Director Parker led Maya to have a prenatal examination that he glanced at Liam and asked, "Third young master, this is..."
Maya looked at Director Parker, who was full of doubt, and smiled, saying, "The father of the child."
"Third young master, a pleasure to meet you! A pleasure to meet you!" Director Parker extended his right hand in greeting to Liam.
Seeing this, Liam responded with a smile, extended his right hand to shake hands, and nodded to show his greeting.
"Liam, I’m going for a prenatal check-up. Will you wait here, or..."
"I’ll go with you." Before Maya could finish, Liam interrupted, took her hand, and followed Director Parker to the obstetrics department.
Feeling Liam’s sweaty palm holding her hand tightly, Maya could sense his nervousness.
Maya inhaled deeply, lifted her head slightly, and glanced at him; she could tell he cared deeply about the child, eagerly anticipating his arrival. Seeing Liam’s nervous demeanor gave Maya some comfort.
Perhaps because of his unease, she felt at ease.
In the obstetrics department, the doctor conducted a series of examinations on Maya’s body and said, "Miss Hanson, please wait a moment, the results will be out shortly."
"Mm!" Maya nodded. At this moment, she was much calmer than Liam.
A moment later, the doctor came with Maya’s examination results and said, "Miss Hanson, I’m sorry, but you are not currently pregnant."
"Not pregnant, how is that possible?" Maya listened to the doctor’s result, her eyes widened and, unable to control herself, she tightly grasped her phone and handbag, stepping forward close to the doctor, staring intently into his eyes as she asked.
"Miss Hanson, you really aren’t pregnant, and our examination shows that your current health condition isn’t suitable for pregnancy. There are still residual medications in your body, so it’s a good thing you aren’t pregnant yet. You can consider conceiving after the medications have cleared, which is best for both you and the baby." The doctor explained again, looking at Maya’s distrustful eyes.
This result was unacceptable to Maya. She distinctly felt she was pregnant; 3 years ago, the same symptoms had indicated her pregnancy.
So, she swallowed and said, "Could it be that your examination missed something? 3 years ago, these symptoms meant I was pregnant. I remember the feeling very clearly, and my intuition can’t be wrong."
Maya had high hopes for this child; he was her only spiritual support for survival. How could her body play tricks on her? She didn’t believe nor was she willing to accept this outcome.
If she’s not pregnant, what should she do next? How should her life continue?
Thinking of these chaotic matters, Maya took several steps back, shaking her head, saying, "Impossible, I can’t not be pregnant."
Beside her, Director Parker watched Maya’s emotions beginning to unravel and quickly comforted her, "Maya, not being pregnant is a good thing. If you really were and couldn’t keep the child, wouldn’t that be more painful? Get your body well, and conceiving again later is the same. You are only 22, still very young, there’s no rush right now."
"Exactly, Miss Hanson, you are so young, playing for a couple more years before having kids isn’t too late. Nowadays, girls feel like they haven’t played enough even at 30, and don’t want to have children! The previous nausea was due to too much emotional tension. If you want to have a baby, you must maintain a good mood, so the baby will be healthy and optimistic." The doctor, seeing Director Parker comforting Maya, also joined in to reassure her, surprised to see a 22-year-old woman so eager to have a child for the first time.
"Maya, if you want to have a baby, you must stop all medications you were taking previously; the best time to conceive is six months later. And remember, no alcohol," Director Parker gave a sincere reminder, especially emphasizing the no alcohol part.
Listening to the doctor’s advice and looking at Maya’s bewildered expression, Liam had even more questions but realized it was not the right time to ask, so he extended his arm to pull Maya into his embrace, patting her back to comfort her, "Maya, it’s okay. It didn’t work out this time; we’ll try again when we get home. Trying again in six months is the same."
For Liam, if the situation was truly as described by the doctor, he would prefer Maya not to be pregnant for now, because losing a child is too painful, he wouldn’t want to endure such agony a second time.
At the same time, Director Parker’s remark about avoiding alcohol brought Liam’s memory back to three years ago.
He still vividly remembered three years ago when Maya misunderstood him. He withdrew Kinsley’s project and his eldest sister’s contract, then staged at a bar. When Maya went to the bar to apologize, she drank quite a bit.
